🔬 UK Government Invests £12M in Sustainable Protein Hub for Cultivated Meat
📚 TL;DR: The UK government is investing £12 million in a cool sustainable protein innovation hub called Cellular Agriculture Manufacturing Hub (CARMA). This hub focuses on cellular agriculture and transforming food production to make it greener and more sustainable. The researchers at CARMA will even explore creating foods like sustainable palm oil through precision fermentation, a technique that uses tiny organisms to produce real egg or dairy proteins, all without involving animals.
🧩 Context: This investment highlights the UK's recognition of cellular agriculture's growth potential and its ability to address food security and net-zero emissions goals. Europe has already established alternative protein alliances as part of the European Green Deal, pledging €100 billion from 2021-2027 for a greener transition, including plant-based and alternative protein investments.

🌱 Cabbage: The New Sustainable Source of Plant-Based Protein
📚 TL;DR: According to the FT, Naylor Farms has developed a method to extract protein from cabbage, opening new possibilities for sustainable plant-based protein sources. The company is building a €38 million facility in the UK, funded by a loan from Invest International, a Dutch state-controlled investment entity. Simon Naylor, the fourth generation of the family-owned farm, collaborated with Dutch scientists to create a "cold press" process that produces the protein, fibre, and a sweet umami syrup from cabbage.
🧩 Context: The new facility is scheduled to start production at the end of 2023 or early 2024. The extracted protein and fibre can be used for plant-based meats and drinks, as well as baking products. The umami sauce produced from cabbage serves as a substitute for soy sauce.
